I love that, Phoebe! It’s been a bit since I’ve dipped into my art journal, but I may just have to look that prompt up on YouTube and join in on visual mapping as a way to practice naming. Thank you for sharing!

came to affect labeling through a completely different door. Etymology and a one-word-a-day journaling practice, and landed in the same room. There's something in the fact that the oldest texts and the newest neuroscience agree: naming the thing is how you stop being swallowed by it.

I am both intrigued and resistant to the idea of a one-word-a-day journal practice! I have too many words!

Aw, thank you for the mention, Lahni! Yes, this practice sits so well with art journalling. I sometimes can't put a name to a feeling until I've put colours or marks onto the page and almost have a conversation with my journal. With your writing about inner landscapes, the idea of making a map springs to mind - labelling the forests, mountains, rivers, oceans, deserts etc according to aspects of my life/thoughts/emotions. One of the Messy May art journalling prompts was Quest (it's on Youtube), which also looks at visual mapping - it's on my list of prompts I still want to do and your post has given me a nudge . . .
